Servicing or building a valve amp?

  • Filter capacitors smooth the power supply and dry out with age. Replacing them is often the first job when reviving an old amp, and a matched filter capacitor set gives you every value in one order.
  • Coupling and tone capacitors sit in the signal path and shape your tone. Orange Drop, Sozo and silver mica caps are popular for vintage-correct builds.
  • Potentiometers come in log (audio) and linear tapers. Match the taper, value and shaft type of the original when you replace one.
  • Resistors and wire. Use resistors with enough wattage for the job, such as 1W for plate resistors and 5W or 10W cement types for hotter spots. Cloth pushback wire suits vintage-style builds, and Teflon wire handles the heat near valves.

Valve amps hold lethal voltages even when unplugged. If you're not experienced, have a qualified technician do the work.
