To Bias or Not to Bias

The terms "fixed" and "cathode" bias are highly misleading because fixed bias is the one you actually have to adjust, while cathode bias is mostly set-and-forget.
In any tube amplifier, the vacuum tubes need a control voltage (called bias) to regulate how much idling current flows through them when you aren't playing. Think of it like setting the idle speed on a car engine: too low and the car stalls (thin, cold tone); too high and the engine overheats (red-plating tubes that burn out fast).
Here is exactly how the two systems work and when you need to intervene.
1. Cathode Bias (Self-Biasing)
Commonly found in smaller amps like the Vox AC30, Fender Tweed Deluxe (5E3), or Marshall Class 5.

How it works: A resistor is placed between the tube's cathode and the ground. As current flows through the tube, a voltage drop naturally forms across this resistor, automatically setting the bias.

The behavior: It adapts dynamically. If a tube starts drawing more current, the voltage drop increases, which naturally throttles the tube back down.

The Tone: Often described as warm, compressed, and "sagging" beautifully when pushed hard.

Do you need to bias it? No. When you change tubes in a cathode-biased amp, you just plug the new ones in (ideally a matched pair). The circuit adjusts itself.
2. Fixed Bias (Adjustable Biasing)
Commonly found in higher-wattage amps like the Fender Twin Reverb, Marshall JCM800, or Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier.

How it works: A separate, dedicated power supply injects a fixed negative voltage directly onto the tube's control grid. The term "fixed" means the voltage stays constant and does not adapt to the tube's behavior.

The behavior: Because it doesn't shift dynamically under load, the amp delivers higher efficiency, tighter bass, and more clean headroom.

The Tone: Punchy, tight, and clear at loud volumes.

Do you need to bias it? Yes. Because every individual vacuum tube draws slightly different current at a given voltage, you must manually adjust the internal potentiometer (or swap resistors) to match the specific set of tubes you just installed.

When and If You Should Bias Your Amp
You only need to worry about biasing under specific circumstances:
1. When changing power tubes in a Fixed Bias amp
If you are putting fresh power tubes into a Marshall Super Lead or a Fender Bassman, you must bias it. If you don't, you run a high risk of running the tubes too "hot" (destroying them and potentially the transformer) or too "cold" (making the amp sound harsh and sterile due to crossover distortion).
Note: Mesa/Boogie amps are fixed-bias but lack an adjustment knob. They design their circuits around a specific spec, meaning you simply have to buy Mesa-branded or color-coded tubes that match their fixed specification.
2. Never for Preamp Tubes
Preamp tubes (the smaller ones like $12\text{AX}7$, $12\text{AU}7$, etc.) are almost universally cathode-biased. You can swap them freely in any amplifier without ever needing a bias adjustment.
3. When you want to alter your tone
If your fixed-bias amp feels a bit stiff, a technician can bias it slightly "hotter" to make it break up sooner and feel softer. Conversely, if you want maximum cleanliness and punch, they can bias it slightly "colder."
⚠️ Safety Warning: The internal capacitors of a tube amplifier hold lethal voltages (often $400\text{V}$ to $500\text{V}$ DC)—even when the amplifier is unplugged from the wall. Unless you own a dedicated external bias probe or know exactly how to safely discharge filter capacitors, biasing is a job best left to a professional amp technician.
