EL84 / 6BQ5 / 7189 Technical Comparison

Comparing maximum voltage tolerances, plate dissipation, and operational notes across popular current production EL84, EL844 and 7189 variants.

Brand / Tube Spec Equivalent Nominal Va Max Plate (Va) Max Screen (Vg2) Max Dissipation Operational Notes
Tung-Sol 7189 / EL84 7189 / 6BQ5 350V – 400V 400V 400V 12W High-voltage drop-in replacement for vintage hi-fi and hot-running guitar amps.
Sovtek EL84 / EL84M 7189 / 6P14P-EV 350V – 450V 450V – 500V 400V 14W Industrial military build with exceptionally high breakdown voltage and stiff headroom.
JJ Electronics EL84 EL84 / 6BQ5 300V – 350V 300V (Data) / ~400V (Test) 300V 12W Standard rating, but widely tested to handle modern push-pull plate voltages robustly.
JJ Electronics EL844 EL84 / 6BQ5 (low-power) 250V – 300V 300V 300V 9W Roughly 25% less power than a standard EL84. Earlier breakup at lower volume, smoother mids and cooler running. Not for high B+ rails.
Electro-Harmonix EL84 Standard EL84 250V – 300V 300V 300V 12W Standard spec with smooth breakup; best suited for vintage-style moderate HT circuits.
Mullard EL84 Reissue Standard EL84 250V – 300V 300V 300V 12W Classic British chime voicing; standard voltage limits. Not for high B+ rails over 350V.
Genalex Gold Lion N709 Premium EL84 300V – 350V 350V 310V 12W Premium build with gold pins; higher tolerance than base EL84s, but under true 7189 ratings.
Low-Power Option: JJ EL844

The JJ EL844 is a drop-in EL84 / 6BQ5 replacement with plate dissipation cut from 12W to 9W (about 25% less power). It reaches power-stage breakup at lower volumes, which suits bedroom practice, recording and small venues, and it runs cooler in crowded combo chassis.

Biasing: cathode-biased amps need no adjustment. In fixed-bias amps, reduce the bias current by roughly 25% to suit the 9W rating.

Selection Note: High-Voltage Amplifiers

Standard EL84s are rated for max plate voltages of 300V–350V. If your plate supply voltage runs between 380V and 420V (common in many modern push-pull and vintage hi-fi circuits), select true 7189 variants like the Tung-Sol 7189 or Sovtek EL84M to prevent red-plating, grid flashover, and premature failure.
