How to choose a guitar speaker

  • Size. Replace like for like, since the speaker has to fit the baffle cut-out. 12" speakers give the fullest low end, 10" speakers are tighter and brighter, and 8" and 6" suit small practice and studio amps.
  • Impedance. Match the total speaker load to your amp's output (4, 8 or 16 ohm). Two 8 ohm speakers in parallel make 4 ohms; in series they make 16 ohms.
  • Power handling. Make sure the combined rating of your speakers is comfortably above your amp's output, especially with low-wattage vintage-style speakers.
  • Ceramic or alnico. Ceramic magnets are tighter with more headroom. Alnico magnets are smoother and compress earlier, which suits lower-volume vintage tones.
