Work safely

Amp plate supplies often run above 400V DC, and filter capacitors can hold that charge after the amp is switched off. Always discharge them before working underneath. If you're not sure, ask a qualified technician; our amp technician list and safety page are a good place to start.

Swapping one tube type for another? Pin numbers matching isn't enough. Heater current, bias and plate voltage all need to suit the amp. A 6L6 draws 0.9A of heater current and an EL34 draws 1.5A.

Ratings are typical manufacturer figures for general guidance. Always confirm against your tube's datasheet and your amp's schematic.
