Understanding Gain Stages & Microphonics
What is Microphonics?
Microphonics occur when mechanical vibrations inside an amplifier cause the internal elements of a vacuum tube (such as the grid or mica spacers) to physically vibrate. This mechanical movement is amplified as audio, leading to high-pitched squealing, ringing, or rustling sounds.
V1 Position Importance: The first preamp socket (V1) amplifies the raw instrument signal before any other stage. Any microphonic ring or noise present in V1 is multiplied through every subsequent gain stage. Always select high-grade, low-microphonic tubes (like 7025, E83CC, or premium-tested 12AX7s) for V1.
How Gain Stages Work Together
Preamp tubes are dual-triodes, containing two independent amplification stages inside a single glass envelope. Most guitar amplifiers cascade these stages sequentially (V1 → V2 → Tone Stack → Phase Inverter).
